What XIRR does

XIRR finds the single yearly rate at which all your investments, grown from their own dates, add up exactly to what you have today (and what you've taken out). A rupee invested last month has had far less time to grow than one invested three years ago, and XIRR gives each its due. It's the number mutual fund statements, P2P and invoice discounting platforms report as "returns" or "IRR".
