Rules of thumb

For most salaried people the new regime now wins, because of the ₹75,000 standard deduction, wider slabs and the full rebate up to ₹12 lakh. The old regime tends to come out ahead only with large deductions: typically a home loan, high rent with HRA, plus full 80C and NPS.

Salaried employees can switch regimes every year when filing their return. People with business income can switch back to the old regime only once.
